SHOW PRESS RELEASE
The
sixty-fourth Denbigh Flower Show was held at Lon Felin Field, Ystrad
Road, Denbigh on Saturday 26th August 2006. Unfortunately,
once again the weather was unkind with showers throughout the morning
and early part of the afternoon.
The Show was
hailed a great success by the many visitors but the attendance was down
on last year due to the damp conditions. The Show Day President, Mr R M
Owen, Local Historian and former Headmaster, presented the fifty cups
and trophies to the winners and thanked the Committee for their efforts
in preparing the Show.
Notable
winners were: Mr Neil Evans of Rhuddlan who had several trophies for
sweet peas, cut flowers, chrysanthemums and vegetables, Mr Michael
Andrews of Denbigh took three trophies for vegetable exhibits including
best local amateur, first time exhibitor at Denbigh, Mrs Carole Bright
of Flint took four trophies in the amateur flower section. The floral
art section saw Mrs Betty Parker of Trefnant winning two trophies,
Eileen Thomas of Flint won the Joyce Montgomery Memorial Cup for the
novice classes as well as successes by sisters Beti Smilovici and Nest
Houghton. In the Children’s Section brothers Tomos Daniel and Jack
Alun Davies won under 7 yrs and 7 to 11yrs trophies respectively, the
Zyl cup was won by Lara Jane Pritchard and the W H Jones Cup for the
miniature garden went to Abby Ringer. The Denbigh Flower Show People's
award, voted for by the public was awarded to Mr Doris Roberts of
Denbigh for her table arrangement.
On the field,
the additional attractions proved very popular. After an absence of
twenty years, horse jumping was brought back courtesy of Dyfnog Stud
Farm and this was complimented by two displays of Mounted Games by the
Flint and Denbigh Pony Club. Former World Sheepdog Champion Aled Owen
gave a display in the main ring and music was provided by the Dixie Jazz
Rag, Royal Buckley Town Band and John Sellers with his band at the bar.
Mr Bobby
Owen's Old Denbighites tent reminded us of how Denbigh used to be and
the children were all entertained at the fun fair and by the Punch and
Judy shows. Adele Meads School of Dancing gave a display from ‘The Show
Stoppers’ and another reintroduction after a twenty year absence was the
Denbigh and District Cage Bird Society’s stand. The entertainment
programme was saved by several local people providing generators at
short notice when a power cut affected the Ystrad area.
The Committee
would like to thank all those who helped in any way to make the Show a
success and are overwhelmed by the community spirit and generosity of
local people and businesses, without whom the show would not be
possible.
Next year's Show planning starts now for the 23rd
August 2008. Anyone who feels that they may like to join the Committee
or any other organisations who would like to get involved in new
sections of the Show should contact Steve Williams, Secretary on 07968
